Christensen's Disruptive Innovation after the Lepore Critique
Remaking the University
· Must innovation disrupt everything so that society might have new and better things? Widespread fatigue with this idea inspired a number of headlines last week.
· Paul Krugman described a "careful takedown," suggesting that the whole era of innovation might collapse from its own overhype ("Creative Destruction Yada Yada") Jonathan Rees referenced an "absolutely devastating takedown." All three were talking about Jill Lepore's much-discussed New Yorker critique of prominent business consultant Clayton Christensen's theory of "disruptive innovation."
· The stakes of this debate about innovation are high. Corporate America, health care, manufacturing, and the contemporary university have all tied their reputations to their delivery of innovation. Innovation comes with lots of turmoil, unilateral management decision making, and interference with how people do their jobs.
· The main point I will make here is that we can't overcome disruptive innovation unless we realize that it isn't a theory of innovation but a theory of governance.
· Prof. Lepore's work will be wasted unless we can move from disruptive to sustainable innovation, which she argued is better than the disruptive kind. But we won't get sustainable innovation until we identify its opposition in current managerial culture.

Online Learning Numbers at All-time High
Boston Consulting Group
· A new study on online education shows that 34% of all college students are taking at least one online course, which is an all-time high, and online enrollment is growing more than five times faster than total enrollment.
· According to the Boston Consulting Group report, 15% of all higher education students are learning primarily through online courses, studying in a program that is at least 80% online. That figure was 6% nearly a decade ago.
· Students from high schools and colleges who were surveyed, as well as parents, showed positive attitudes toward online courses, but some skepticism remains about online-only degree programs. For example, parents were 13% more likely to withhold financial support for their children’s pursuit of online degrees than traditional or hybrid degrees.
· As a consequence of the increasing spread of online education, institutions are finding that the needs of the current mix of students differ from those of the past. Those needs are being transformed by broader generational, digital, and marketing trends.
· Educational leaders and institutions would be wise to pay careful attention to these segments and the shifts in demand they represent. Traditional models will not reach most of the population in the future. Even existing online models—with their emphasis on mostly static, learn-at-your own-pace experiences and undifferentiated teaching—will not be sufficient unto themselves.

'DIY labs offer an agile alternative to university-based research'
· Laden with institutional bureaucracy and hampered by protracted funding and publishing systems, the juggernaut of university research is slow to change direction. In an era of rapid global change, are universities really the best places for progressive research?
· A quiet revolution is happening – independent research organisations and DIY labs have been popping up around the world, and with scientists becoming increasingly despondent about academia, the attractiveness of startup organisations is growing.
· Independent research organisations are usually created to address a particular issue like wildlife conservation or space exploration, while DIY labs are typically based around open-source principles, providing community access to lab kit and to scientific training. Both offer alternative models for research that deserve attention in the face of discontentment of university research communities.

· In an age of visualization, analytics, big data, and new forms of online publishing, these central spaces can facilitate knowledge creation and transfer by connecting people, data, and technology in a shared collaborative space.

New Coursera chief stresses the ‘wow’ factor of huge audience for free online courses

· Richard C. Levin, the new chief executive of Coursera, the most widely used MOOC platform, wants to steer the conversation back to what grabbed public attention in the first place: the wow factor.
· Sure, Levin said, the emerging technology will help professors stimulate students on campus who are tired of old-school lectures. The talk of “flipped classrooms” and “blended learning” — weaving MOOCs into classroom experiences — is not mere hype. “But that is not the big picture,” Levin said in a visit last week to The Washington Post. “The big picture is this magnifies the reach of universities by two or three orders of magnitude.”

A College Major Matters Even More in a Recession

· Graduating into a recession is unlucky. The bad luck haunts young people for years, studies have shown, affecting their salaries, employment prospects and even their health and happiness.
· But recessions don’t treat all college graduates equally. Those who major in subjects that command higher salaries, like engineering and finance, increase their earnings advantage when they graduate into a recession.
· And those who major in subjects that lead to lower-paying jobs, like philosophy and music, are even more disadvantaged than in normal economic times.

Google Is Putting $50 Million Toward Getting Girls to Code
· Made With Code is a new Google initiative to motivate future female programmers. Only 18% of computer science degrees are earned by women, and Google is spending $50 million over the next three years to change those numbers.
